Govind Pillai Says ‘So, what is our new show In Plain Sanskrit about?”. Experimenting (potentially dangerously) with the 3000 year-old classical Indian dance tradition – removing a lot of the paraphernalia that has been accumulated over the years to expose what we feel is at its core. Raw and un-produced: skin, voice, chanting, sweat, hair, holy water, soul. Not costumes, complex music, elaborate stories, jewellery, etc. But in peeling away the layers, not only did we get closer to the traditional at times – we also found ourselves challenging/questioning it to discover a whole new dance aesthetic that is modern and contemporary – and I think that’s what makes this work both traditional and modern at once – at least to us.
