Annalouise Paul is a pioneering dancer and choreographer who has danced for Michael Jackson, Antonio Vargas Co., Simply Red, Los Angeles Opera, Sydney Festival and Australian Dance Awards at the Sydney Opera House. She was assistant choreographer on ‘True Lies’ working with Arnold Schwarzengger and director James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar, Terminator). Annalouise has been the recipient of Arts NSW, Australia Council, Greater London Arts and Critical Path to research and develop her own choreographies. Annalouise has collaborated extensively with Bobby Singh for several years on these works. Bobby is one of Australia’s well-known tabla players, a student of Pandit Nikhil Ghosh and Aneesh Pradhan. Bobby Singh has received numerous awards and performed with musicians all over the world and in many festivals. I watched two shows in 2008 Isabel, a collaboration between Annalouise Paul and Bobby Singh who explore the story of Queen Isabel through Flamenco Dance and tabla Rhythms and Game On, a flirtatious game between dance in movement and tabla rhythms between Miranda Wheen, an agile contemporary dancer and Bobby Singh amongst other musicians at the Parramatta Riverside Theatre. Impressed with their work I have been trying to arrange an interview with Annalouise Paul for some time now and was [...]

Chidambaram R Suresh is a multitalented artist. A dancer, singer, composer and a master Nattvangist who received his tutelage from Prof CV Chandrasekar he entranced his audiences with the powerful composition of his jathis through the evening of Aanandha Koothan, the Joy that is Dance. Dancer Shobana Suresh and her sister Nikhedana Sasisekaran executed the jathis composed by Suresh in perfect harmony with correct postures, angular and strict movements with grace lending meaning to the sometimes hard to understand rhythmic patterns. Educated in the fine art of Bharathanatyam under the tutelage of CV Chandrashekar, both Suresh and Shobana are professional dancers and graduates of Dance from Annamalai University. Their dedication to the art has brought them the respect they deserve in the community in Sydney. The performance was a sold out success. Despite having migrated only recently, it was commendable and generous of them to contribute to the Aust Medical Aid Foundation an organization that is offering scholarships to medical students in financial need in Sri Lanka The show commenced with the resounding voice of a first gen second year Sydney Uni student, Sruti Balaji singing Ganesha Stuthi and Alarippu in Gambeera Nattai set to Sandha Thalam of 6.5 atcharas [...]

MA3KA – Majestic Theatre of Dance Clad in gorgeous Green costume, Anita Ratnam depicts Meenakshi as a warrior woman who transforms into a woman in love with Sundareswarar. Ratnam’s latest production MA3KA stood out amongst various programmes and events I attended this December Season in Chennai. Ma3ka a celebration of women gives human faces to goddesses combining Humanity and Divinity. Anita Ratnam beautifully interwove her life experience and the training she had undertaken in various art forms (Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Mohiniyattom, Kalaripayattu) in this production. MA3KA in Anita Ratnam’s usual yet unusual way ‘margam’ brings out her distinctive flair & creativity. Many critics and other well recognized stalwarts of Bharathanatyam were present on the night of the performance besides the followers of Anita Ratnam. With her innovative approach to dance Anita Ratnam today has created her own audience and followers. In Ma3ka Anita explores a woman’s achievements, challenges and longings through the three Supreme Goddesses: Lakshmi, Saraswati and with a twist the Goddess Meenakshi instead of the choice by default Shakti. Adding a bit of reality into these Mythological goddess theme Anita beautifully blends in the women in her family; her 95-year-old grandmother as Saraswati, who even at this age, continues [...]
