As we live our mundane existence, occasionally a voice shall rise from its very depths and challenge us. It grabs us forging forward compelling us to look anew, exceed our expectations, extols and excels. Its sweet challenge shall shake deep seated convictions and practices making us take a harder, longer and closer look at what it is that made and makes the fiber of carnatic music today, in a grand way setting a grand example. This voice belongs to the musician singer scholar, Thodur Madabusi Krishna. This month Sydhwaney has spent hours documenting TM Krishna’s musical explorations in Australia with delight and awe. But it is not over. Enough and more cannot express the unfathomable heights reached by TMK at the recent concert organised by Swaralaya called ‘Pallavis‘. As the name suggests TMK clearly established the format for the evening will be Carnatic Music in a new skin seen through his clear intellect. Accompanied by Murugaboopathy on the Mridangam, whose complimenting beats never over powered TMK’s theme. Shriram Kumar Violin well established partnership with TMK flowered even more through the concert. TMK commenced with a rather short rendition of a ragam thanam pallavi in Hamsadhvani. This was followed by an complicated Kanda Jathi [swing [...]

TM Krishna in concert with RK ShriramKumar and Thanjavur Murugaboopathi Brisbane – 26 June 2010 By Varsha and Moahan Venkatesan The evening was like a white-water rafting experience for our emotions as the trio played with the audience’s collective core of deep feelings. Krishna hit some incredible notes during the concert and all of us were with him with the nervous excitement of “Can he? Will he?” as he zoomed effortlessly into those unattainable highs and lows…. RK Shriramkumar’s deft fingers weaved a rich tapestry of the lakshanam of every ragam and his ebullient exchanges with TM Krishna were a feast to the eye and the ear. The very evident mutual admiration and respect they share left the rasikas with a mesmerising musical experience. Murugaboopathi on the Mridangam brought out sounds that rang through the core of one’s existence. The superb support to the ever changing patterns and textures of the music was pleasing and brought out the raw emotion of every piece in an aesthetic manner. His Thani aavarthanam left the audience tapping their feet asking for more. Roshini Sriram on the Tambura provided the rich ambience required for a grand evening. The Shankarabharanam start bhakthi biccha miyyavE baavukamagu [...]

Boring !! is a word which has no place in the dictonary of a creative mind for their battle is only with one thing Time !! To catch up with time. For how can one catch up with time that never sleeps, never stops for any one. As I stay awake one morning this very theme strikes me as something many poets may have written about and so I take you on a journey of timeless pieces that talk about time.. Time that never sleeps !! Sanjay Subrahmanyam one of the foremost classical carnatic singers in India today steals the show for his intuitive rendition of this wonderful poetry written in Tamil by V Pillai. The poet simply commences by saying: “The country side sleeps quietly, while you are awake; You with your running shoes on do not stop, with careless disregard for others you run ; do you care about who lives or dies and or what is happening around you ! You who are hated by those indebted knee deep! You! Oh Time ! Oh Time ! This Full Song can be downloaded here A talented group of artists Sandy Evans on Saxophone, Satsuki Odamura on Koto and Tony Lewis on rhythms present their Jazzy interpretation of ‘Time that never Sleeps’.
LISTEN to Anuradha Kuber singing Raag Kedar below . Purchase her CD at Underscore Records Click Here Natraj Arts have been organising North South Double Bills for the last 15 years in Australia. The concerts last for about one and half hours each. “Just enough time for listeners who have not heard this type of music before to be introduced to both styles on a night out in the city” says Mohindar Dhillon. Organised with flair Natraj Arts, once again brought the best musicians to Sydney, presenting them in the best of venues each time, the concert was held at the Sydney Theatre Company. Mandolin Srinivas was accompanied by his brother Rajesh on the Mandolin with Murugabhoopathy on the Mridangam. U Srinivas and Rajesh presented a ragam thanam pallavi in Ragam Shanmughapriya. U Srinivas’s development of the raga in Shanmughapriya was exquisite which was followed by a ragamalika in various ragas some of them recognisable as Mohanam, Shivaranjini, Bhoopalam etc. A swift Nalinakanthi “manavyalakin” in Adhi Thalam, 16 beat cycle, added the required tempo and texture to the concert. Murugabhoopathy presented a “Konnakol [voice percussion] followed by playing the same rhythmic structures on the mridangam”. Decidedly a roaring success with the audience. The concert had all the beauty and frills required to make [...]
