Shashi Bala’s Natya Darshan
A scintillating evening of Indian dancing was on show under the auspice of Natya Dharshan on the 30th of May 2009. Dance Director Sashi Bala had selected for this occasion some of the finest, but highly complex dance items including Surya Namaskar, Mallari, Annamachar’s depiction of Lakshmi Narayana, Pinnal Kolattam (Veil dance), Tharana and Devi Durga. Mallari represented the typical temple procession which was lead by the male drummer. The dance provided a scintillating rhythmic footwork and body movement along with display of all the paraphernalia used for temple procession including colourful vahana (to carry the god), umbrella, and drum and the drummer. The Annamaacharia Keerthanas touched the hearts of the Telugu and Kannada audience and was performed by the Senior artists (including Sashi Bala) and Guest artists.
Tharana was unique with a great deal of vibrance in that this traditional Hindustani song was performed in South Indian Bharatha Natyam style. The juniors carried out the Krishna leela routine with beauty and ease. Devi Durga, the finale and highlight of the evening was performed with a great deal of care for movement and expression. This dance ballet told the story of goddess Durga, one of the female deities of Hindu pantheon and the manner in which she annihilated the buffalo headed demon. The choreography and story telling was spectacular. Male dancers as demons, Sashi Bala as Durga, senior core dancers as story tellers and warriors were all outstanding and portrayed excellent expression. It is important to mention here that all the weapons and props looked extremely realistic and made by the mothers of the dancers. The spiritual symbolism of the weapons such as the Thrishul/Trident, Sword, Chakra, Bow and arrow etc. was portrayed very well and was an eye-opener for the audience. During the final dance, the audience participation in the form of rhythmic applauding was proof enough of their enjoyment and appreciation of the performance.
